Abstract:
Pedestrian safety remains a critical concern in urban environments, particularly as cities experience growth and development. This case study examines the intersection of 18th and Boston in Midtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, as a representative example of the challenges faced in balancing infrastructure improvements with the specific needs of pedestrian safety. Through observational data, stakeholder interviews, and analysis of city planning documents, this study identifies key contributing factors to the perceived danger of this intersection and explores potential solutions for mitigating these risks.
Introduction:
Rapid urban growth often necessitates significant infrastructure development. While such projects aim to improve overall functionality and livability, they can inadvertently create or exacerbate pedestrian safety issues if not carefully planned and implemented. This study focuses on the intersection of 18th and Boston in Midtown Tulsa, a location identified by local businesses and community members as posing a significant risk to pedestrian safety. The intersection’s current configuration, characterized by poorly marked crosswalks, inadequate lighting, and high traffic volume, exemplifies the complex interplay of factors that contribute to pedestrian vulnerability.
