Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual event that takes place in March to raise awareness about patient safety and recognize the work that has already been done.

In 2024, the week will be held from March 10–16. The Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) sponsors the week, which aims to inspire action to improve the safety of the healthcare system for patients and the workforce. The week also provides an opportunity to celebrate successes and share resources.
According to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement some major focus areas of the National Patient Safety Goals include:
- Promoting surgical safety
- Achieving health equity
- Preventing hospital-acquired infections
- Preventing medication errors
- Preventing inpatient suicide
- Preventing specific clinical harms such as falls and pressure ulcers
Some research studies suggest that 250,000 to 400,000 deaths in the United States each year are due to errors.
The American Hospital Association (AHA) is the national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. Nearly 5,000 hospitals, health care systems, networks, other providers of care and 43,000 individual members come together to form the AHA.
